   Archdiocese of Portland becomes first U.S. diocese to file for bankruptcy

   Facing abuse claims seeking hundreds of millions of dollars, the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon filed for Chapter 11 protection hours before a trial was to begin, the first Catholic diocese in the U.S. to do so.
